Follow the trail inside the white pine forest!

In 2010, Fern Hollow teamed up with local graduate student (Rosemary Stewart- Slippery Rock University) to create this fun outdoor play space. This area was certified by the Arbor Day Foundation as an official “Nature Explore Classroom” and was the first certified nature play area of its kind in the state of Pennsylvania. This area is made up of several activity stations which encourage imaginative play in the outdoors. Our official Nature Play dates are scheduled weekly throughout the warm summer months. Check Fern Hollow’s website for details. Activities in the outdoor classroom are always changing but here are some of the things you will find in our classroom all year long:

Tire obstacle course - Race your friends for the fastest time

Crawl through tunnel - See what it’s like to crawl through the forest like an animal

DIY natural music maker – “Pebble Harp”- Drop small rocks down into the grooves on the top of this wooden to create a beautiful sounds.

Fossil pit with a giant sifter - Dig around and sift through the dirt to uncover buried treasure or mammal bone!

Lean To Building –Use the sticks, pine needles and upright posts to build yourself a shelter in nature!

Garden Watch Tower – Climb up into this wooden platform to get a different view of the plants and critters living in our white pine forest.

Giant Bird’s Nest – Check out our gigantic bird’s nest! This one is big enough for humans to fit in! Pretend you are a baby bird waiting for your mom to bring you some food or act like a momma bird and sit on one of our giant eggs (they are really round rocks)!
