EASTER CELEBRATION AND EGG HUNT

Saturday, March 27th from 1:00 to 3:00pm

Join Fern Hollow Nature Center for our 1st Annual Easter Celebration.  Enjoy a presentation on English Lop rabbits by Brock Meanor, local Quaker Valley student and owner of Windy Hill Rabbitry.  Brock will tell the children all about his Rabbitry and will also bring along a couple of his prize rabbits to meet.  Following the presentation there will be an Easter Egg Hunt (weather permitting), games, and refreshments.  Program Fee:  FHNC Members $5 per child/Non-members $7 per child.  Geared towards children 2-8 years.  Reservations are requested for this program.  Please call 412-741-6136 to register.


AMPHIBIANS OF THE NIGHT

Friday, April 9th from 7:00-8:30pm

Join Naturalist, April Claus at Fern Hollow Nature Center to learn about everyone’s favorite 4 legged amphibians!  SALAMANDERS, TOADS, AND FROGS!  We will start at Fern Hollow Nature Center for a short program and a chance to get up close and personal with different amphibians, then the group will venture over to Sewickley Heights Borough Park for a night hike to a vernal pond to listen to frog calls and look for amphibian egg masses.  SPACE IS LIMITED, CONTACT APRIL CLAUS AT 412-741-7536 TO RESERVE A SPOT.  Program Fee:  FHNC Members are $2 per person or $5 per family and Non-members are $4 per person or $10 per family.  Don’t forget your boots… this one will be muddy!


FHNC’S SLOW FOOD SERIES:  PASTA AND EGGS

Sunday, April 18th 4:00 – 6:00pm

What’s growing in our community?  Last summer we took you to bountiful Italian gardens in the heart of Sewickley.  Now learn how many people throughout the Quaker Valley are raising chickens.  After an informative presentation, learn what to do with all those eggs – make fresh pasta.  This hands-on session will include a tasting and some pasta to take home.  Program is open to the public. Reservations are requested.  Please call 412-741-6136 to register or email fhnc@verizon.net.  FHNC Members are $5 per person for the lecture and $15 to participate in lecture and pasta making and Non-members are $10 per person for the lecture and $25 for both.

2ND ANNUAL SEWICKLEY NEIGHBORHOOD PLANT EXCHANGE

Saturday, May 15th from 10:00 – 12:00pm

Have plants you must prune or cull?  How about trading your excess with others in your neighborhood?  Join us at Fern Hollow for the 2nd Annual Sewickley Neighborhood Plant Exchange.  Take home new plants for your yard and have an instant new garden.  All types of plants welcome- small cuttings up to full size:  anything native, succulents, tropicals, ground cover, flowers, wild grasses, vines, bushes, bulbs, clippings, etc.  Gardening accessories and accents also welcome.  All plants must be identified.  Bring newspaper, bags, cardboard boxes to carry plants home in.    Questions?  Call 412-741-6136 or email fhnc@verizon.net for more info.

FHNC’S SLOW FOOD SERIES:  BEES N HONEY

Saturday, May 22nd from 4:00 – 6:00 pm

Learn how the co-evolution of bees and flowers created the modern world.  Following the presentation there will be a tasting of local honey and sweet and savory items made from honey.  We might even have a taste of Mead (and if you don’t know what that is, please come and find out).
