Our science programs encourage kids to get outside and explore nature through hands-on, engaging activities.

All programs will take place from 10:15am – 12:15pm
at Fern Hollow Nature Center, 1901 Glen Mitchell Rd, Sewickley.

To cultivate a sense of community and allow for students to develop meaningful social connections, homeschool families are invited to stay and have lunch on the grounds after dismissal.
Bring a picnic or snack and explore our Nature Outdoor Classroom, meadow, trails and pond!

Member fee:
$175 for 10 sessions

Insects comprise over 80% of terrestrial species here on Earth, and are among the most vital part of our ecosystem. Join us to learn about this often misunderstood group of creatures.

Owls are the silent hunters of the night. Come learn about how these birds hunt in darkness and dissect an owl pellet to see what they have eaten.

Join Fern Hollow’s Educators to celebrate the Fall Harvest with a fun night of nature and games!
Learn all about animals of the night while enjoying fall crafts and a night hike.

We will celebrate the Fall Harvest with s’mores on the bonfire, a costume contest, and pumpkin carving!

Dressing up is encouraged but not required.

All Fern Hollow’s Homeschoolers signed up for the 10 sessions, and their families are invited, at no extra fee.
An email with an RSVP invitation will be sent out prior to the event.

Do bears really hibernate? Scientists have studied the winter patterns of bears, and they believe they do not truly enter hibernation. We will study the black bears of PA and debate whether or not they truly enter hibernation. What side will you be on?

Every year, citizen scientists from all over America come together to look for as many bird species as possible in their own backyards. They share this data with real scientists for the purpose of tracking bird populations. Join us as citizen scientists and help us to protect the birds that call Fern Hollow home.

How did the rocks we have here in Western PA form? What happened to create the rocks we have here? What kinds of rocks will we not find in this part of the world? Come and study many of the interesting rocks from here and around the world as we explore geology!

Join us at Fern Hollow to learn about the biology of Acer saccharum, more commonly known as Sugar Maples. Learn why we harvest maple sap in the late winter to turn into maple syrup and the process of taking it from sap to syrup.

Honey Bees are a fascinating insect that have a complex community system. Learn all about the life cycle of honeybees and see real bees in our observation hive inside our classroom. Discover honey bee biology using microscopes and learn what life is like inside the hive.

Do you know how your garden grows? Do you know that trees communicate with one another? Join us at Fern Hollow to study Botany and Dendrology and learn about the flora all around us.
