Environmental Educator

Position Description:
The nature center is seeking an environmental educator to start in January 2024. The primary responsibilities of the educator will include the preparation, planning, and delivery of school programs and other environmental education programming at Fern Hollow Nature Center. This job will entail teaching students of all ages, from preschool to adults, and managing teen and adult volunteers and 1099 workers. Office duties include scheduling programs and volunteers, developing lesson plans, and other clerical needs. Educators also assist with the everyday maintenance and care of the facilities, which include the FHNC outdoor classroom and nature play area, and native gardens. Fern Hollow will provide on-site training.

Job Specifics:

  • The Environmental Educator(s) will work an average of 32-40 hours per week
  • Hours worked per week will depend on the nature center programming schedule and will include some weekend and evening hours.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize and coordinate the teaching of all current and new programs for schools.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate the teaching of other programs at the center, including family programs, children’s programs, adult programs, after-school clubs and programs, scout programs, birthday parties, and summer camps. The center should have at least one of the following monthly programs-hike, club, children’s, adult, or family program.
  • Assist with the everyday maintenance and care of the facilities, which includes the FHNC outdoor classroom & nature play area and native gardens.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in a relevant field (a combination of education and pertinent experience may be considered)
  • Ability to lead and teach environmental-based programming to a range of ages/ skill levels
  • Experience working with children
  • Enjoy public speaking or working with the public
  • Be enthusiastic about natural resource education, conservation, and stewardship
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (some programming is offsite)
  • Basic computer skills
  • Dependable, reliable, and prompt with a strong love for the outdoors, children, and nature
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some weekends and evenings
  • First Aid, CPR, and clearances/ background checks are required (may be completed after hiring)
  • Willingness to work on new projects
  • Able to lift 50lbs
