Stories from the Hollow – Linda Pell

“I volunteer because I love being outdoors. Fern Hollow Nature Center was a gift from the Snyder Family, so in that sense I think we are stewards of this area. When Allegheny Land Trust gives something or something is gifted to Fern Hollow, it’s our area and we should take care of it and keep it natural.

I give back because I love their programming! I’m looking forward to more adult programming in topics like mead, maple sugaring, and things like that. People are overall invested in learning about how to turn things from the garden into syrups or wine and beer. I value having professionals teach in this space. I think after renovations, the additional space will lend to that.

I’ve been involved in refurbishing the Children’s Garden, like adding a water source, changing the boxes to be more environmentally friendly, and a general overhaul for the past four years. I just thought to myself at a clean up day ‘we can make this better.’ It’s so rewarding to be involved and see the children utilize it.

A lot of people don’t know what’s here. They don’t know there’s an area where they can bring their dog on a leash. This is such a nice nature center!

After I volunteer here I usually feel tired, but also rewarded. It’s so nice to be outside even if it’s not a great day. Everyone that comes and helps is amazing. Out here [in the garden today], we have multiple generations, the very young and a senior member of the community that would like to help! It’s so nice to come and work in a garden with your hands in the dirt.

Being in the garden and learning about how people get their food and how hard it is to grow. Between pests and bunnies, it’s a learning experience. It makes you feel good when you eat a meal grown from Fern Hollow’s garden. I’ve learned a lot by being involved.”
